Where are the Cayman Islands?The Cayman Islands are a group of three small islands located in the Caribbean. They lie about 480 miles south of Miami, Florida, which is a one hour flight. They are south of Cuba and North West of Jamaica. The time zone is GMT -5.
What size are the islands?Grand Cayman is 76 square miles, approximately 22 miles long and 7 ½ mile wide.
What are the landscapes like?The Cayman Islands are the peaks of a massive underwater ridge called the Cayman Ridge. It stands 8000 feet from the sea floor. All three of the islands are ringed by healthy coral reefs that are home for marine life and a variety of tropical fish. There are no rivers that run off into the surrounding sea, which is why the water is crystal clear. The clear water, coral reefs and dramatic walls create ideal conditions for sport fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving.
What is the background of the islands?Christopher Columbus discovered the Cayman Islands in 1503. They remained uninhabited long after they were later traded to England in 1670. The superior diving conditions put The Cayman islands on the international tourist map in the 1950’s. During the next decade, the government began to draw up the tax structure that would make Grand Cayman an economic powerhouse and began to put in place an infrastructure that has made it the undisputed capital of Caribbean tourism. They remain a British Crown Colony to this day.
Who lives there?The population is a mix of original descendants, wealthy retirees and the expatriate workforce from financial institutions and the hospitality and tourism industry.
What languages do they speak?The official language is English. What are the Caymanians like?Caymanians are well known as friendly, gentle and devout Christian people. They are proud of their heritage as seamen descended from European settlers. What is healthcare like?There are two hospitals in George Town on Grand Cayman and a small hospital on Cayman Brac. The government maintains a satellite clinic on Little Cayman. Each District has a health clinic. Are the islands politically stable?The success of the Cayman Islands originates from a long-standing stable government, operating under British common law. They have successfully cultivated economic growth to attract investors, multinational organizations and skilled personnel. How safe are the Cayman Islands?Crime on the sister islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman is virtually non-existent. Grand Cayman crime threat is generally considered low. What currency is used in the Cayman Islands?The official currency is the Cayman Islands dollar (CI$). It is permanently fixed at an exchange rate of CI$0.80 = US$1.00 (US$1.00 = CI$1.25). US Dollars are readily accepted but change will be given in CI Dollars. Can a non-resident open a Cayman bank account?Yes. You must comply with the banks’ due diligence process and make a minimum deposit. Each bank has a different application process but it is fairly straight forward. There are offshore banks and several retail banks: Cayman National Bank, Butterfield Bank, Royal Bank, Scotiabank, Fidelity and First Caribbean.
